President Köhler from Germany honours IBSA Europe’s Dr. Axel Bolsinger.

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Prof. Dr. Horst Köhler, has awarded Dr. Axel Bolsinger with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The Order was presented by the State Minister of the Interior and Sports, Hr. Karl Peter Bruch, on 28th January 2008, at the Interior Ministry in Mainz, Germany.

During the presentation, the Minister praised Dr. Bolsinger, stating that he was being honoured for his special contribution over many years to national and international blind and disabled sports and to sports ophthalmology and sports medicine, in general.

In response, Dr. Bolsinger expressed his gratitude for the honour bestowed upon him; however, he emphasised that he regarded the award as an acknowledgement of the excellent work being undertaken by many dedicated people within the world of blind and disabled sports.

The ceremony was also attended by Ms Evelyn Bolsinger; Mr. Neil O’Donovan – Chairman, IBSA Europe; Dr. Peter van de Vliet - Medical & Scientific Director, International Paralympic Committee and Dr. Karl Quade - Vice President, NPC Germany.

Player Darryl Green, USA, passed away:

Photo Darryl D. Green in throwing action.Darryl Green (24), a blind athlete from Philadelphia, was killed by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning, June 4, 2007 in St. Augustine, Florida. He and his team had won the silver medal at the National Goalball Championships just hours earlier. Darryl was a member of the Blind Sports Organization (BSO) in Pennsylvania. We in Kentucky are saddened by the loss.
Below is an e-mail from one of Darryl's teammates, John Mulhern:

"Dear Friends,

It is with much sadness and grief that we regretfully share with you the
loss of long-time, dedicated BSO member Darryl Green. He was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver at about 1:30 this morning (June 3) in St. Augustine, FL. This occurred shortly after he and his teammates had finished competing in the National Goalball Championships. Darryl, who was 24, was a very dedicated and accomplished member of the BSO traveling Goalball and Beep Baseball teams.
He also helped many other blind and visually impaired youth and adults learn and improve their skills in both sports.
Darryl will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all BSO members who had the fortune of knowing him.

Coach John Bakos, USA, passed away:

It is with regret that we let everyone know that USA Coach John Bakos passed away Feb. 25, 2006. 

He went into the hospital on Feb 9 at which time it was discovered he had advanced cancer.He spent the last few days at home with his family and friends.

Coach Bakos a former secondary school and college basketball coach first got involved with goalball while attending the blind rehabilitation program at Wester Michigan University under Dr. Paul Ponchillia who introduced him. He quickly found a passion for the game.
He first served the USA team as a substitute assistant coach at the Pan-Am Games in 2001. He became the head coach in 2003. He was leading the USA team to 2nd place in the qualifying tournament for the 2004 Paralympic Games at which the USA team won the bronze medal.

Coach Bakos will be missed by the many coaches and goalball friends he made in his short time involved in the sport.
